BYOD Specifications

‘Bring Your Own Device’ - Device Specifications

Student devices must meet the following specifications to ensure the compatiblity with CHS Wireless Network and applications used in class.

Form Factor

Laptop, hybrid (touch screen notebook) or tablet device

Note: Tablets or hybrids must have a physical keyboard attachment with separate keys for A-Z and 0 – 9, which physically move when depressed.

Physical Dimensions

Minimum Screen Size: 10”

Maximum Screen Size: 14”

Note: students may request to bring in a larger device if a larger screen is needed for specific subjects, otherwise it is highly recommended to have a device within these specs.

Operating System
  • Microsoft Windows 10
  • Apple MacOSX 10.13 High Sierra (or newer) or iOS 13
Note: Android-based tablets are omitted from the Hardware Specification due to incompatibilities with some applications on the DEC wireless protocols.

 

Chromebooks are generally not recommended as students in Year 9 and 10 who undertake IST, Visual Arts or Photography cannot install the apps required by these elective subjects.

802.11 n/ac wireless capabilities (5 GHz)

Note: This may be advertised as: “WiFi 6 or WiFi 5, Dual Band Wireless”, “802.11ac” or “Gigabit Wireless”. 

2.4 GHz WiFi will not work with CHS Wireless Network.

Additional Requirements Students in year 9 and 10 undertaking elective Information and Software Technology (IST), Visual Arts (VA) and/or Photography and Digital Media (PDM) are required to have a device with a Windows 10 or Mac OSX 10.13 (or newer) operating system to allow installation of required software.

Storage Recommedations

Minimum Storage: 128 GB

Recommended Storage: 256 GB or more

Memory (RAM) Recommendations
Minimum RAM (Laptops): 4 GB (or 8 GB for Yr 9/10 IST/VA/PDM students)

General Education Software

● Web browser – Windows computers must run Microsoft Edge. Firefox, Chrome and Safari (Mac) are recommended.

● Word Processor – E.g. Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, OpenOffice Writer.

● Spreadsheet Package – E.g. Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers, OpenOffice Calc.

Note 1: Students can download Microsoft Office 365 (at no cost) for Windows and Mac OSX from www.office.com. Instructions on how to do this are available on the school’s website. These instructions are a MUST READ!!

Note 2: All students have a Google Apps account linked to their portal account, which includes basic office software including Google Docs and Spreadsheets.

Elective Software

IST, VA and PDM - Adobe Creative Cloud is provided (at no cost) as part of their student account.

Security Software Current and reputable software such as Microsoft Defender (Free) or paid solutions such as Bitdefender, Norton and McAfee (Optional)
