The Duke of Edinburgh Award

Students in Years 9 to 12 at Chatswood High School have the opportunity to participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, a globally recognised program that encourages young people to challenge themselves, develop new skills, and contribute to their communities.

About the Award

The Duke of Ed is an enriching, self-directed program where students design their own unique experience based on their interests and passions. Participation is voluntary and structured to be flexible, allowing students to set personal goals and work towards achieving them at their own pace.

Award Levels and Sections

Students can participate in three award levelsBronze, Silver, and Gold. Each level consists of four key sections:

  • Physical Recreation – Staying active through sports or fitness activities
  • Skills – Developing a personal skill or hobby
  • Service – Contributing to the community through volunteering
  • Adventurous Journey (AJ) – Undertaking an outdoor expedition

Students select an activity in each area and track their regular participation over a period of three to twelve months, depending on the award level.

While many students begin the Bronze Award in Year 9, the program is open to all students in Year 9 and above, meaning students in Years 10 or 11 can still start at the Bronze level. The Gold Award is typically completed over 1-2 years, depending on individual progress.

The program fosters goal-setting, perseverance, and resilience, equipping students with valuable life skills that prepare them for future challenges.
